About the talk

Quantum science is a topic from the previous century; in 2025 we celebrate its 100th anniversary. However, it is only in this century that we speak of "quantum technology." Quantum is no longer solely the domain of fundamentally-minded physicists; practically-oriented engineers are now also mastering the laws of the quantum world. Quantum technology has a magical quality: a particle can be in two places at the same time, it can tunnel through an impenetrable wall, and there exists an invisible connection that can link it to another distant particle. This lecture provides an introduction to the magic world of quantum technology.

Prof. Carlo Beenakker is a theoretical physicist at the Instituut-Lorentz of Leiden University, where he studies the strange world of quantum physics, in particular in view of applications to quantum computing. He is a recipient of the Spinoza award and the AKZO-Nobel Science award, a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Knight in the order of the Dutch Lion.
