About the talk
The saying goes, "Money doesn't make you happy," but many people don't fully agree with this. After all, we all want a big house, a luxury sports car, and to win the lottery. In this Think & Drink Different, Prof. dr. Martijn Burger explores what we know from the "economics of happiness" about the relationship between money and happiness. Does our wealth explain why the Netherlands is one of the happiest countries in the world? Are poorer people really less happy than richer people? Do we become happier when we earn more, and do bonuses contribute to happiness? And does it matter how you spend your money?
Martijn Burger is Academic Director at the Erasmus Happiness Economics Research Organisation (EHERO), Erasmus University Rotterdam, Professor of Happiness Economics in the Faculty of Management Studies at the Open University of the Netherlands, and visiting professor at the School of Economics at the University of Johannesburg. He obtained his Ph.D. in Economics (cum laude) from the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Most of his current research focuses on geography of happiness, worker well-being, and institutional and social conditions for happiness.
